Cake Face Paints - Like the old-style and still widely used theatrical pancake makeup, cake style makeup is easy to transport, store, and apply. Greasepaint has been used for hundreds of years in the theater and in plays. It has great staying power and is used commonly by clowns. Greasepaint is difficult to remove and therefore is not the best choice for small kids. Grease Paint can have a thick and slimy feeling and is not as common as water-based paint.

It transfers on clothes and can get messy. Greasepaint can settle deep in the pores, and leave a residue behind. It can also turn rancid. Alcohol paint is waterproof and has great staying power. If you are working through hot sweaty days, or need it to last all day long this is a good choice. You can apply it with a brush or with an airbrush machine which gives a very well blended appearance.

Alcohol paint can be rubbed off on apparel, but not quite as easy as water-based paints. Liquid paints can be used in Airbrush machines for a flawless look. You can use liquid paints right out of the bottle or thinned to use through an Airbrush. It dries pretty quick, within seconds and dries to a smudge proof finish.

Liquid makeup is water-based and comes clean with soap and water. You can mix liquid makeup to achieve to the perfect shade you are looking for with distilled water. This is due to the texture that this paint has. Typically, the face painter will be using her fingers because using a brush can be challenging. Another great kind of paint for face painting is cream based ones. Since this kind of paint comes in tubes, you can squeeze them until the last drop. The only downside of this face paint is that it may take a little while for it to dry up.

Powder-based face paints are perfect whether dry or wet, which makes them very versatile. So it would be best to be careful when you are using this kind of face paint.

Now, if you prefer using it dry, then applying a base first would be best. But keep in mind that this kind of paint tends to be messy at times. Your face painter should already know about this. Typically wax based face paints are used by the majority of the face painters if they want to add in more details. They are all fragrance-free too, so they will not irritate the skin either! Being water-based, the paints are easy to apply and easy to remove.

Simply add a few drops of water to the color you want to use to activate the paint, and you can start applying it to the skin with a brush or sponge. When done, wipe away the paint with some warm water and mild soap. Forget having to scrub the skin or use harsh soaps to remove the paint; it slides off easily and leaves no residue behind. While you can technically use acrylic paint on your face, it is not a good idea at all, and it is highly recommended that you do not.

Acrylic paints can contain chemicals and toxins that can irritate the skin and even cause long-term damage. Some acrylic paints are labeled as non-toxic, but this does not mean that they are safe to use on your face.

You will also have a difficult time removing the acrylic paint from your skin without scrubbing and hurting yourself. Water-based face paints are probably the safest for the face. These are usually suitable for sensitive skin and do not contain harsh ingredients that could irritate the skin.

Once done, these are easy to remove using some warm water and mild soap. Good water-based face paints are non-toxic, non-allergenic, and fragrance-free. This means they are safe to use for children as well. If you are wanting to start face painting at parties or events, you will need to have a face painting kit.

Some of the essentials you need include face paints, different size face paint brushes, sponges, plastic cups for water, a face cloth, a portable mirror or two, and some added accents like glitter or rhinestones. You could also keep some step-by-step face painting instruction books or stencils to make the process easier at first.
