I always missed the first save point in the Alchemy Laboratory for some reason. Though I've never had any problems using a save point, actually having a copy of the instruction manual and all. Hah yeah for me it wasn't the pressing up part so much, I just had some horrible luck missing the first save spot or 2. As long as it takes to play back through the beginning, after the 2nd restart I was starting to wonder about the saving too.
